Who doesn’t love a good, wholesome fairy tale, complete with a Fairy Queen, who also happens to be the tooth fairy and protector of Bluebell Forest! I know I do. Following the Fairy Queen’s adventure between the magical, mystical world and the real world, we witness the delicate balance between good and evil, and the fragility of the world around us. While the Fairy Queen works hard to protect the natural world, there are others who seek to destroy it. And then along comes a little girl who longs to meet a real fairy and fly through the magical skies with this fairy. She even builds a little door so the fairy can come to visit. The Fairy Queen accepts the invitation and the two weave their own adventures as they work together to save the natural world.

Tanya Squire’s picture book story, A Pocket Full of Fairy Tales, is a collection of stories centering around the most loved fairy of all, the tooth fairy. The first story in the collection introduces the Fairy Queen and her desire to find the perfect house, but each one has its flaws until the Fairy Queen is delegated with collecting children’s baby teeth. What a grand palace she builds with all the teeth she collects! But the Fairy Queen’s adventures are more than just building castles. She has a job to do, one that she pursues with joy and compassion: saving the natural world, particularly a place called the Bluebell Forest. Each little fairy tale in this collection involves the Fairy Queen and each tale is a progression of the Fairy Queen’s life and work. This is a great way to teach young readers about caring for others and caring for the world around them. Beautifully illustrated

'My favourite poem of yours was the one where the animals turned to stone. I liked it the most because the fairy has enough power to free them from stone'

I have just finished reading ‘a pocket full of fairy tales’. Tanya’s great sense of adventure and imagination really shines through. I think my favourite is ‘The Protector of Fairyland’! because it reminds me of ‘Ferngully’-one of my favourite ever children’s films! xx

I am a Year 6 teacher and subject leader of English at my primary school, and after reading ‘A Pocket Full of Fairy Tales,’ I felt I just had to write a review about it! It is such a brilliant poetic story which will appeal to so many children; both boys and girls. I would particularly recommend it to children aged between 5-8 years old and children who are in Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 at school. It has a fantastic range of vocabulary and punctuation which is perfect for spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG) curriculum objectives. This book is also essential when studying poetry and the key features of this text type. I often find it difficult to find a model poetry book when I’m teaching poems to my classes, so will definitely be using this one as my example! The book also has beautifully written and imaginative characterisation with its enchanting characters such as Tiffany and the Fairy Queen, and they are perfect for children to think about when they are completing their own creative writing. The story will be great for any class topics based on fantasy worlds or fantasy characters and it is guaranteed to engage its readers with its beautiful illustrations and fantastic poetic storytelling. It definitely deserves to be very successful- I would thoroughly recommend it to children, teachers and parents!
